The European Commission says Ukraine will not be able to use the EU's latest €6.1 billion defence package to purchase US-made weapons, including Patriot interceptor missiles. Commission spokesperson Balazs Ujvari said there is no derogation in the latest funding round, meaning eligible military equipment must be produced in the EU or Ukraine. The restriction comes despite Ukraine's repeated requests for additional Patriot systems and interceptors to strengthen its air defences. The package was approved under the EU's €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan for 2026 and 2027, bringing defence procurement plans cleared under the programme to €22.1 billion. While Brussels previously allowed an exemption for Ukraine's first procurement schedule covering drones, officials say no such exception applies to the latest €6.1 billion round.
