NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says Russia is struggling in Ukraine and is responding with increasingly reckless attacks close to NATO territory.

Speaking alongside Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša in Brussels, Rutte praised Slovenia’s contribution to NATO deterrence, defence and stability in the Western Balkans.

He highlighted Slovenia’s role in NATO forward land forces in Latvia and Slovakia, its contribution to KFOR in Kosovo and its support for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Rutte also thanked Slovenia for its support to Ukraine, including security assistance, ammunition initiatives and personnel supporting NATO training efforts.

Turning to Russia, he said Moscow is suffering enormous losses and described the recent strike on a passenger train in Ukraine as evidence of Putin’s desperation.

Rutte said the Kremlin is trying to undermine NATO unity and weaken Western support for Kyiv.

His response was clear:
“He is wrong.”
NATO will increase support for Ukraine and maintain an “ironclad” commitment to collective defence.
“We will always do what is necessary to protect every inch of Allied territory.”
