Former top US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a Senate hearing on Wednesday, declining to answer questions before the committee chaired by Republican Senator Rand Paul. In his opening statement, Fauci said he was acting on the advice of his lawyers and accused Paul of waging an "unhinged" campaign to have him imprisoned. Paul has repeatedly alleged that Fauci misled Congress over NIH funding for gain-of-function research in Wuhan and helped conceal the origins of Covid-19—claims that Fauci has consistently denied.
