India’s independence was not won overnight. It was built through decades of struggle, sacrifice and extraordinary courage by thousands of Indians who devoted their lives to the cause of freedom.

While names such as Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh remain deeply etched in public memory, countless unsung freedom fighters also played crucial roles in India’s struggle against British rule.

This Independence Day special remembers some of those forgotten heroes — Madam Bhikaji Cama, who carried India’s freedom struggle to the international stage; Matangini Hazra, who continued marching with the Tricolour even after being shot; Kalpana Dutt, a revolutionary of the Chittagong Armoury Raid movement; U. Srinivasa Mallya, who fought for freedom and social reform; and Tara Rani Srivastava, who continued towards her mission despite a devastating personal loss.

Their stories represent the courage, sacrifice and determination that shaped the destiny of a free India.

As the Tricolour flies proudly across the nation, let us remember not only the celebrated leaders but also the countless ordinary Indians whose extraordinary courage helped win our freedom.
