Ukraine is set to receive Swedish Saab Gripen fighter jets in a major boost to its air force and air defence capabilities.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that Ukraine will buy 20 new Gripen E fighter jets, while Sweden will also donate 16 older Gripen C/D aircraft next year as a temporary solution.

The deal comes as Ukraine seeks to modernize its air force amid the ongoing war with Russia. Known for being cost-effective, easy to maintain and capable of operating from roads and dispersed bases, the Gripen is seen as a practical alternative to more advanced Western fighters like the F-35.

Sweden has emerged as one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters, providing billions in military and civilian aid since Russia’s invasion.
