Donald Trump said that the United States is continuing negotiations with Iran despite a fresh exchange of fire between the two sides near the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters while inspecting renovation work at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, Trump downplayed the latest confrontation and insisted that the ceasefire with Iran remained in place.

Referring to the clash, Trump said, “They trifled with us today. We blew them away.” Trump also reiterated that Iran would never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, saying Tehran understood the U.S. position and had agreed to it in principle.

Asked about the status of negotiations, Trump said a deal could come together at any time, though he acknowledged there was no certainty. “It might not happen, but it could happen any day,” he said, adding that he believed Iran was more eager to reach an agreement than the United States.
