European Commission Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu said the Commission’s Security College discussed the situation in Ukraine and on Europe’s eastern border.
Mînzatu explained that this was not the first time the Commission had held such a security discussion, but that new developments require regular reassessment.
She said the mid-year review was also linked to Europe’s wider need for preparedness in the face of evolving security threats.
The Executive Vice-President confirmed that the Commission has set up a Security College Secretariat to support this regular work.
She stressed that the European Commission is part of the policy choices Europe makes to respond to security concerns on the continent.
Mînzatu also addressed two European Citizens’ Initiatives. One initiative on digital identity, internet access and age verification was considered eligible and will move forward in the legal process.
However, a second initiative seeking to stop migration flows from non-Western countries based on criteria such as race, nationality or ethnicity was found not eligible due to lack of legal soundness and legal basis.
Her message was clear: the Commission is strengthening security preparedness while also upholding EU legal principles and fundamental rights.
