Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has taken aim at US President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei as Brazil’s presidential election campaign begins to heat up.

Speaking at a Workers’ Party event in Fortaleza, Ceará, Lula declared that Brazil’s far right would not return to power while he is alive and rejected foreign support for his political rivals.

“Let Trump come, let Milei come,” Lula said, insisting that the only support he wants is from Brazilian voters to “preserve democracy”.

Lula also called for greater investment in education, including mathematics, engineering and artificial intelligence, saying Brazil needs to compete with China.

The president said he plans to formally launch his candidacy on August 16 at Vila Euclides stadium in São Bernardo do Campo, a historic site associated with the metalworkers’ strikes he led in 1979 and 1980.

Lula’s main rival is Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who has received backing from Milei and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump also hosted Flávio Bolsonaro at the White House in May.
