An EU spokesperson strongly condemned Russia’s attacks linked to the Black Sea and Ukraine’s export routes.

Speaking on foreign affairs and the Russia–Ukraine war, the spokesperson said Russia is once again trying to turn the Black Sea into a zone of fear and disruption.

According to the EU, Russia is deliberately striking civilian shipping, freedom of navigation and the food security of millions across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

The spokesperson said Moscow claims to speak for countries in need of food imports, but its attacks on Ukraine’s agriculture industry, ports, grain terminals and cargo ships show a different reality.

The EU stressed that from the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, Moscow has sought to weaponise food and undermine global food security by threatening the Black Sea export route.

The message was clear: Brussels sees Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s ports and shipping as an assault not only on Ukraine, but also on global food security.
