European Commission Midday Press Briefing — 27 August 2026

The European Commission addressed major developments across climate policy, digital regulation, defence, Ukraine, enlargement and international trade.

🇫🇷 France: President Ursula von der Leyen is traveling to Paris to deliver a keynote address at La REF 2026.

🇬🇷 Greece: The Commission approved a €4.77 billion Social Climate Plan for 2026–2032, the largest national approval under the EU Social Climate Fund so far. The package includes home renovations, heat pumps, solar water heaters, electric buses, Athens metro expansion and social vehicle leasing.

🇨🇿 Czechia: The briefing paid tribute to former European Commission official and journalist Karel Barták.

🇪🇺 Digital Services Act: The Commission discussed enforcement concerning Meta's Instagram and Facebook, with particular attention to children's online safety, addictive design, algorithmic feeds and age verification.

🛡️ European Defence: Updates were provided on Defence Readiness 2030, joint procurement and initiatives including Eastern Flank Watch, Drone Defence, Air Shield and Space Shield.

🇷🇴 Romania: Questions addressed judicial independence, anti-corruption measures and the country's integrity framework.

🇺🇦 Ukraine: The Commission discussed the use of extraordinary revenues generated by immobilized Russian sovereign assets to support Ukraine's military assistance, air defence and reconstruction.

🇮🇸 Iceland: EU relations and European integration were discussed.

🇨🇾 Cyprus: The Commission reaffirmed support for UN-led settlement negotiations.

🇦🇺 EU–Australia: Renewed technical discussions are addressing market access, sustainable agriculture and critical raw materials.

The Commission also outlined President von der Leyen's upcoming agenda, including a planned visit to Nuuk, Greenland, on 6–7 September 2026.
