Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia has given fresh momentum to bilateral ties, with the Sabang Port project emerging as a key strategic outcome. Located on Indonesia’s Weh Island at the entrance to the Strait of Malacca, the port offers India a crucial maritime foothold near one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes and lies just 160 kilometres from the proposed Great Nicobar trans-shipment hub. Together, the two ports could strengthen regional trade, improve logistics, support naval operations, and enhance disaster relief capabilities while boosting connectivity between India and Southeast Asia. The project also carries significant geopolitical importance as India seeks to counter China’s expanding maritime influence in the Indo-Pacific through its "String of Pearls" network. Alongside the port agreement, India and Indonesia deepened defence cooperation with deals on BrahMos cruise missiles and Astra air-to-air missiles, underscoring a broader strategic partnership aimed at strengthening maritime security, regional stability, and supply-chain resilience across the Indo-Pacific.
