BRICS countries have spent years looking for ways to reduce their dependence on the US dollar and Western-controlled financial infrastructure. The push accelerated after Russian banks were hit by sanctions and excluded from global payment networks following the invasion of Ukraine. But a single BRICS currency remains unrealistic because members have different economies, political priorities and monetary systems. Instead, the bloc is increasingly using national currencies for trade and exploring alternative payment mechanisms. At the BRICS summit hosted by India, proposals include easier digital payments between members and greater use of central bank digital currencies. The goal is not replacing the dollar, but building routes around it.
