DHS Removes 800+ Dangerous Truckers From U.S. Roads in Operation Highway Shield

The Department of Homeland Security is highlighting the results of Operation Highway Shield, a joint DHS-DOT enforcement operation targeting unsafe commercial drivers, vehicles and other violations across the Midwest.
According to DHS, the July 2026 operation in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Ohio resulted in 766 unsafe drivers and vehicles being placed out of service, 51 illegal immigrants detained, 86 arrests and 36 English proficiency violations. Authorities also recovered nearly $1 million in stolen cargo.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin praised the operation, saying more than 800 dangerous truckers had been removed from U.S. roads and promising continued enforcement against what the department describes as bad actors.
The operation is part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to target alleged CDL fraud, unqualified drivers and unsafe commercial vehicles while strengthening highway safety enforcement.
Federal authorities have conducted similar enforcement actions in other states as the administration increases scrutiny of the commercial trucking industry and driver qualifications.
