Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong faces a series of pointed questions in Senate Estimates over the government's position on Australian women linked to ISIS who remain in Syrian detention camps.

Senator James Paterson repeatedly presses Wong on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's earlier statement that reports about ISIS brides returning to Australia were "not accurate", asking how the Prime Minister could have known that if he had not been briefed on the matter.
The questioning then turns to what the government considers "assistance", including citizenship by descent, passports and other documentation required for Australians overseas to enter the country.

Wong maintains that the government is not providing repatriation assistance to the individuals currently in the Syrian IDP camps, while arguing that Australian officials carrying out their legal obligations is a separate matter.

The exchange also revisits Australia's 2022 repatriation of Australian women and children from Syrian camps and questions why the government's approach is different now.
