Ukraine’s F-16 fighter force is now facing a severe shortage of air-to-air missiles, forcing pilots to ration scarce AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-120 AMRAAM stocks. The situation is so tight that air force personnel track incoming shipments by the hour and even the minute, hoping the weapons arrive before Russia’s next large-scale aerial attack.
A senior commander using the callsign Phantom, who leads Ukraine’s 107th Wing, confirmed the crisis. “Any aircraft without weapons is useless,” he said. Some daytime missions have already seen F-16s engage Russian drones and cruise missiles using only the aircraft’s 20mm cannon because missiles were not available. Using the gun against small, slow aerial targets is risky, especially at night.
The F-16s have become a key part of Ukraine’s air defenses since arriving in 2024, hunting incoming drones and cruise missiles while also offering a counter to Russian fighters. They have scored notable successes, including the confirmed shoot-down of a Russian Su-35. Yet without a steady flow of missiles, the jets cannot stay fully combat-effective.
The shortage is part of a wider interceptor crunch. Patriot batteries are also running low, and global demand—driven by conflicts in the Middle East as well as Ukraine—has outpaced production. Phantom called for increased manufacturing, possible production of missiles inside Ukraine or Europe, and tighter sanctions to stop Russia obtaining key components through third countries.
Without a reliable weapons pipeline, even advanced Western fighters risk being grounded or limited to gun-only sorties as winter approaches and Russian strikes on energy infrastructure typically intensify.
