"It's in our national interest to be closer to Europe and whether that's the EU loan scheme which we are discussing with them, that's a great benefit to Ukraine but it's also a great benefit to the United Kingdom as well in terms of the jobs that it will create in the United Kingdom. So the benefit there outweighs the cost, but more generally it is important that we see our future as a close relationship with the EU. That's in our national interests and that's what I've been discussing here and on previous occasions and of course at our summit that will be coming up in coming months."

STORYLINE:
Leaders from the European Political Community (EPC) on Monday discussed on Monday ways to help Ukraine and secure the Strait of Hormuz as tension on both fronts remains high.
"The situation is clearly evolving. It is really important that we get the Strait of Hormuz open because that is directly impacting on our economy," said UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the end of the meeting in the Armenian capital, Yerevan.
"In recent months we've pulled together a group of countries to have a reassurance presence including a military presence as soon as it's safe to get vessels through," Starmer said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also attended the summit where he got the reassurance of financial and military backing.
Leaders from European Union countries and regional partners, including Balkan countries, UK, Turkey, Canada and more travelled to Yerevan for the EPC summit.
Leaders also said on Monday said that US President Donald Trump’s snap decision to pull thousands of US troops out of Germany came as a surprise but is a fresh sign that Europe must take care of its own security.
Trump offered no reason for the move, which blindsided NATO, but his decision came amid an escalating dispute with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the US-Israeli war on Iran, and Trump’s anger over European allies’ reluctance to get involved in the conflict in the Middle East.
Merz did not attend the EPC summit but his spokesman Stefan Kornelius, asked in Berlin whether the US can still be relied on as a military partner, replied: “Absolutely.”
