Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the India-supported conservation and restoration project at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Prambanan Temple complex, highlighting the deep civilisational ties between India and Indonesia. Built in the 9th century, Prambanan is Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex, dedicated to Lord Shiva and renowned for its towering architecture and Ramayana-inspired carvings. Damaged over centuries by earthquakes and natural decay, the site is now being scientifically restored with the expertise of the Archaeological Survey of India. The initiative is part of India’s broader heritage diplomacy, which has supported the conservation of culturally significant monuments across Asia, including Angkor Wat in Cambodia, My Son Sanctuary in Vietnam, Vat Phou in Laos, heritage temples in Bangladesh, Bagan in Myanmar, restoration projects in Nepal and Sri Lanka, and the Shreenathji Temple in Bahrain.
