Putin Lands in India for BRICS Summit, Shadowed by Iran and Ukraine Wars
New Delhi, India
Date: September 11, 2026
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Friday ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit, as the expanded grouping prepares to confront major geopolitical divisions caused by the wars in Iran and Ukraine.
Putin’s arrival at Palam Air Force Station marks his first overseas participation in a BRICS summit since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He was received by India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, before beginning a three-day visit that includes high-level bilateral meetings.
The Russian leader is expected to hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi focusing on trade, energy, defence, investment and broader strategic cooperation. India remains one of Russia’s most important economic partners, particularly in the energy sector, despite Western sanctions imposed over the Ukraine war. The two countries are also seeking to expand bilateral trade and explore cooperation in areas including technology, nuclear energy and defence.
However, the BRICS summit is taking place against a difficult geopolitical backdrop. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also expected in New Delhi, placing the conflict involving Iran and the wider Middle East firmly on the summit agenda. Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are all members of the expanded BRICS grouping but hold differing positions on the conflict, potentially making a unified response difficult.
The war in Ukraine will also remain a sensitive issue. India has maintained close relations with Moscow while repeatedly advocating dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Indian officials have also been engaging with Kyiv, reflecting New Delhi’s effort to maintain diplomatic balance.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend as well, making the summit particularly significant for India’s relations with both Russia and China.
With 11 member states now forming the bloc, the summit will test whether BRICS can overcome its internal divisions and present a united position on the major conflicts shaping global politics.
