NATO leaders gathered in Turkey for a major working session focused on defence spending, alliance unity, Ukraine, and global security challenges. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan highlighted Turkey’s plans to increase defence spending and expand its role within NATO, while also backing President Donald Trump’s approach to seeking peace in Ukraine.

During the summit, Erdogan said Turkey supports the Ukraine requirements initiative and will continue providing support while using diplomatic channels to encourage Russia toward peace. He also praised Trump’s efforts regarding the Iran crisis and said Turkey was prepared to contribute to clearing mines from the Strait of Hormuz.

The Turkish president called for stronger cooperation among NATO allies, warned against divisions within Europe’s security structure, and argued that defence cooperation should strengthen transatlantic unity.

The NATO session comes as members debate future defence commitments, military capabilities, and the alliance’s response to conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Leaders are also discussing increased defence spending targets and how NATO countries can share greater responsibility for collective security.
