A powerful offshore magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday, killing at least 15 people and injuring more than 200 others. The quake triggered a tsunami warning and caused widespread destruction across Mindanao.

The epicenter was located off Sarangani province near General Santos City, where buildings collapsed, infrastructure was damaged, and residents were forced to evacuate. Landslides in mountainous areas added to the devastation, killing multiple villagers.

Authorities confirmed tsunami waves of around 1 meter reached nearby coastal areas, while smaller waves were detected across Indonesia, Palau, and southern Japan.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered a full-scale emergency response, activating a “whole-of-government approach” as rescue operations continue across affected regions.

According to PHIVOLCS, the quake originated from movement along the Cotabato Trench, one of the most active seismic zones in the Philippines, previously linked to the deadly 1976 Moro Gulf earthquake.

Rescue teams continue to search for survivors as aftershocks remain a serious concern.
