Taoiseach Micheál Martin issued an EU security warning as Ireland took on the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, speaking during a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at University College Cork.

Martin said Ireland’s EU Presidency would focus on competitiveness, values and security, warning that Europe faces increased threat and conflict. He said the EU must work harder to protect citizens, democracies and the European way of life, while reaffirming Ireland’s support for Ukraine.

The Cork visit came as the College of Commissioners met Irish Government ministers to discuss key EU priorities, including the long-term EU budget, trade, digital transformation, AI, energy, Ukraine, enlargement and the Middle East.
