The United Nations General Assembly has backed a resolution promoting the use of the Equal Earth map projection, which represents the relative sizes of countries and continents more accurately than the widely used Mercator projection.

Under the new projection, Africa will appear significantly larger, while Europe and North America will appear smaller. The resolution was introduced by Togo with African Union support and passed with 164 votes in favour, six abstentions and only the United States voting against.

The resolution is not legally binding and does not prohibit the use of Mercator maps, particularly for navigation.
