Representative Jamie Raskin used a House Judiciary Committee hearing to argue that US copyright law has not kept pace with the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. Opening the hearing on protecting creators in the age of AI, Raskin described learning that several of his books had been used to train Anthropic's Claude large language model as part of litigation involving the company.

Raskin said the experience highlighted broader concerns over how AI developers use copyrighted material to train generative AI systems. While noting that a federal judge found aspects of Anthropic's use to be protected under fair use, he argued that creators deserve stronger protections and questioned whether current laws adequately compensate writers, artists and other rights holders.

The congressman also warned that AI is accelerating long-standing challenges involving copyright, counterfeit goods and digital piracy. He called on Congress to modernise intellectual property laws, address the spread of deepfakes, ensure fair treatment for creators and consumers, and develop a regulatory framework that supports innovation without sacrificing accountability.
