Ibrahim Traoré has launched one of the most controversial religious policies in Burkina Faso.

During a meeting with community leaders, Traoré ordered Burkinabè students studying Islamic education in Arab countries to return home. He warned that those who refuse could risk losing their citizenship.

Traoré says the decision is not an attack on Islam. He argues that extremist preachers are using religion to spread division, influence young people and support the ideas behind terrorism.

His government also plans to support imams who preach peace, unity and responsible religious teaching.

Supporters believe Traoré is protecting Burkina Faso from extremism and foreign influence. Critics fear this could become a dangerous step toward government control of religion.
