Burkina Faso's transitional President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has questioned the educational priorities of some Burkinabe students studying in Arab countries, saying the nation urgently needs more engineers, scientists, technicians, and skilled professionals to accelerate national development.

According to reports from Dakaractu, Traoré said that about 1,000 Burkinabe students are currently studying Sharia and Islamic law in Saudi Arabia instead of pursuing technical, scientific, and vocational fields that could contribute directly to Burkina Faso's economic growth and industrialization.

He reportedly stated that the government plans to bring the students back to Burkina Faso and warned that those who refuse to return could risk losing their citizenship, although no official policy implementing such a measure has been announced.

The remarks come shortly after Burkina Faso enacted a new law on religious freedoms. The legislation upholds every citizen's right to practice their religion while introducing tighter regulations governing religious activities across the country.

Traoré's comments have sparked widespread debate, with supporters arguing that the country must prioritize practical skills needed for development, while critics have raised concerns about religious freedom, educational choice, and the reported warning regarding citizenship.
