Ibrahim Traoré is often compared to Thomas Sankara — two young military leaders who rose to power in Burkina Faso, challenged established political systems, and placed African sovereignty and self-reliance at the center of their political message.

But the comparison raises a much bigger question:

Is Ibrahim Traoré really walking the path Thomas Sankara once walked — and what can Sankara's tragic story teach us about where that path can lead?

Thomas Sankara came to power in 1983 and became one of Africa's most influential revolutionary leaders. Four years later, he was assassinated during a coup led by his former ally Blaise Compaoré.

In 2022, Ibrahim Traoré emerged as Burkina Faso's military leader after another coup. Since then, his speeches and political project have repeatedly invoked themes associated with Sankara, including sovereignty, self-reliance, anti-imperialism and national dignity.

But Burkina Faso today is not the Burkina Faso of the 1980s.

The security crisis is different. The geopolitical environment is different. And Traoré's government faces challenges that Sankara never faced in quite the same way.

So is history repeating itself?

Or is Ibrahim Traoré writing an entirely different chapter?
