Former Cross River state governor Donald Duke has recounted how former military head of state Ibrahim Babangida allegedly warned ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo against trusting his then deputy, Atiku Abubakar, during political tensions ahead of the 2003 presidential election. Duke’s account is contained in a new book by Seun Oloketuyi titled “How to Win Elections in Nigeria”, In the book, Duke was quoted to have said that IBB told Obasanjo, “this one cannot rule Nigeria.”

Duke’s account tells of the intrigues that took place during Obasanjo’s run for a second term when a disloyal Atiku tried to upstage his boss by galvanising the northern govs around himself, as his belief is that votes from the north can secure the presidency. A massive miscalculation.

In 2023, we saw Atiku again trying to use similar tribal tactics by campaigning in the north that northerners should not vote for an Ibo or Yoruba but an Hausa speaking fellow like himself.

Atiku’s tribal bigotry is well known, his corrupt antecedents is well known. and his desperation to become president any cost is well known, these are very bad weaknesses for anyone who wants to rule a multinational state like Nigeria, do we agree with IBB that such a person is not fit to rule Nigeria.
