On December 31st, 1983, Nigeria's Second Republic ended in a single night.
While Nigerians were preparing to welcome a new year, soldiers were moving into position across Lagos and other strategic locations. Radio and television stations were seized, airports and borders were closed, and the civilian government of President Shehu Shagari was brought to an abrupt end.
But the story of the 1983 coup is more complicated than the announcement that Major General Muhammadu Buhari had taken power.
At the presidential residence in Abuja, Brigadier Ibrahim Bako was killed at the gate while attempting to carry out the operation against Shagari. The president had already received a warning that something was coming. A secret conversation involving an officer and his wife had reportedly leaked information about the coup to Plateau State Governor Solomon Lar, giving Shagari precious hours before the soldiers arrived. And when the order came, Captain Augustine Anyogo refused to obey it.
