Ibrahim Traoré is taking Burkina Faso’s relationship with Russia beyond weapons and security—and the next phase could focus heavily on energy, agriculture, technology and industrial development.

Burkina Faso and Russia are preparing to deepen economic cooperation as Ouagadougou searches for new ways to address some of the biggest obstacles standing between the country and industrialization.

The central challenge is electricity.

The report examined in this commentary cites electricity access of only around 26%, creating a major obstacle for factories, mineral processing, modern agriculture and broader industrial development.

Russia is positioning itself as one potential partner.

Burkina Faso has pursued discussions around thermal electricity generation while also working with Russia’s Rosatom on its much longer-term nuclear ambitions.
