Diplomatic relations between the European Union and West Africa's military-led Sahel nations have hit a new low. Burkina Faso’s ruling junta recently summoned the EU Ambassador following an European Parliament resolution that heavily criticised the country's deteriorating human rights record and failure to contain an expanding jihadist insurgency. Introduced by French MEP Christophe Gomart, the resolution also highlighted alarming growth in Russian regional influence. In response, Burkina Faso's military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, has fiercely rejected Western democracy and defence frameworks, cementing the nation's pivot towards Moscow. Compounding this geopolitical fracture, neighbouring Niger has formally requested to exit the International Criminal Court (ICC), following a joint declaration with Mali and Burkina Faso condemning the tribunal as a neo-colonial tool.
