The newly reassigned Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Ahmed Ibrahim, has bemoaned Ghana’s slow progress in addressing its housing deficit, questioning why the country is struggling while its neighbour makes giant strides.

“What is wrong with us as a country? Ivory Coast is building 50,000 houses while Ghana is unable to build 15,000 houses,” the Minister quizzed.

Mr. Ibrahim made the remarks on Monday during the handing-over ceremony at the Ministry, where he took over from Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, who has been reassigned to the Ministry of Defence.

According to him, fixing Ghana’s housing, flooding, and water challenges cannot be achieved by the ministry alone but requires a collective national effort and, crucially, strong financial backing.

“You need a buy-in from all, and you need a buy-in from the Finance Minister. A Finance Minister who doesn’t help Works and Housing is like a rich man who doesn’t build for his children,” he added, drawing laughter and applause from staff,” he stated.

The Banda MP called for transparency and teamwork in the execution of the Ministry’s mandate, noting that silo operations have hampered progress in the past.

“Let us open up in a transparent way. Let us work together because President Mahama doesn’t like people working in silos,” he stated.
