IPL founder and first chairman Lalit Modi claimed that threats linked to fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim were among the biggest reasons he stepped away from cricket administration.

Modi alleged that there were multiple attempts on his life after he refused to "look the other way" on match-fixing and betting. He claimed he was offered "hundreds of millions of dollars" to ignore fixing, but declined.

He further alleged that Dawood-linked elements lost significant money after IPL 2009 was shifted to South Africa and subsequently targeted him. Modi also claimed he was once connected to Dawood through an intermediary and later decided to leave cricket after giving his word that he would do so.
