Those around a powerful leader also have a responsibility: to challenge decisions, speak up when something goes wrong and complement the leader’s weaknesses. The same principle, he argues, applies across different administrations-from Anwar to Mahathir and Pak Lah.

Leaders may ultimately carry the responsibility, but those around them also play an important role in protecting the institution and ensuring that power is held to account.
