A fiery congressional exchange over government intervention in financial markets took a sharp turn when Congressman Jim Himes invoked President Donald Trump’s reported $5,000 payment offer as an example of intervention in what he called “political markets.” He argued that if he offered someone $5,000 to direct their Treasury purchases, he could face arrest.

The lawmaker then challenged Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent over the administration’s intervention in the bond market, citing a reported operation involving roughly $10 billion aimed at lowering the yield on the 10-year Treasury. He questioned whether the operation had succeeded after the 10-year yield subsequently rose.

Bessent defended the intervention, pointing to the counterfactual and saying the Treasury subsequently saw two of its most successful auctions in two decades. The exchange came during a broader debate over tariffs, government ownership of companies and what the lawmaker characterized as unprecedented intervention in free markets.
