Johannesburg is facing one of the biggest financial crises in its history, and now South Africa’s National Treasury has officially sounded the alarm.

In a shocking letter sent to Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana warns that the City of Johannesburg may be violating the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), while also raising concerns about severe financial distress, unpaid creditors, overspending, collapsing infrastructure, and potentially unlawful salary agreements.

According to Treasury, Johannesburg owes creditors more than R25 billion while only holding around R3.9 billion in cash and cash equivalents. Treasury also raised concerns about:

* Massive overspending
* Poor revenue collection
* Financial systems failures
* Dysfunctional reporting systems
* Unsustainable wage agreements
* Cash flow instability
* Infrastructure spending without proper cash backing

This comes as Johannesburg residents continue dealing with:

* Massive potholes
* Sinkholes
* Water outages
* Broken traffic lights
* Service delivery collapse
* Infrastructure decay
* Crime and urban decline

The letter paints a devastating picture of governance in South Africa’s economic hub and raises serious questions about coalition politics, ANC leadership, EFF influence, and the future of Johannesburg.

In this episode of Newsflash, Joe Emilio breaks down:

* What Treasury actually said
* Why the situation is so serious
* How Johannesburg reached this point
* Why many residents feel abandoned by politicians
* Whether coalition governments have made things worse
* Why voters may need to rethink the future of Johannesburg politics

The discussion also examines the role of corruption, cadre deployment, coalition instability, and years of alleged financial mismanagement in the collapse of local governance.

Can Johannesburg still recover?

Or is South Africa’s richest city becoming financially unmanageable?

This story has massive implications not just for Gauteng residents, but for the entire South African economy.
