Asked who is really to blame for the state of the public finances, an economist told the Committee it is the politicians — "and, dare I say, the people that elect them" — before adding that he will never run for office himself.

The head of the Resolution Foundation, a former Treasury official, then admitted that every extra pound given to the OBR was a pound less for her own department.

Meanwhile the energy price cap sits at £1,663 and the average band D council tax bill in England has risen to £2,392.

Evidence taken by Yuan Yang, John Glen, Dame Harriett Baldwin and Bobby Dean MPs.

Treasury Select Committee, 17 March 2026 — The OBR: 15 years on.
