Trump Tariffs Help Deliver America’s First June Budget Surplus Since 2015

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent celebrated a major economic milestone after the United States recorded a $27 billion monthly budget surplus in June 2025.

It was the nation’s first June surplus since 2015. Customs duties generated approximately $27.2 billion before refunds and $26.6 billion after refunds—more than four times the revenue collected during June 2024.

Tariffs were not the only reason for the surplus. Federal spending dropped substantially during the month, and the United States still carried a fiscal-year deficit of approximately $1.3 trillion through June.

Still, the numbers show that President Trump’s tariff strategy generated substantial new revenue for the Treasury.
