Trump administration officials are pushing for the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing to place the president’s face on a $250 banknote, sources told The Washington Post.
If the plan moves forward, it would mark the first time since 1886 that a living person’s face appeared on U.S. currency. The note would reportedly commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary and feature an American flag, a logo, and the signatures of President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Employees told the Post that U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach and his senior adviser, Mike Brown, began pushing the proposal last year, raising concerns because federal law currently allows only deceased individuals to appear on U.S. currency.
The Treasury Department told the outlet that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing “is conducting appropriate planning and due diligence.”
Employees said Patricia Solimene, director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and other staff members tried to explain to Beach and Brown that legal and procedural hurdles could take years to overcome, but their concerns were dismissed.
In March, officials announced that Trump’s signature would appear on U.S. banknotes commemorating America’s 250th anniversary. Bessent called it a “powerful way” to recognize both the milestone and the president’s role in the nation’s economic policy.
The U.S. Mint has also been cleared to begin producing a 24-karat gold commemorative coin honoring Trump. The coin is part of a congressionally authorized program directing the Treasury Department to create coins recognizing significant historical figures and events.
Travelers will also begin seeing the president’s face on limited-edition passports created for America’s birthday.
