🥝 Do kiwis actually help you sleep better?

Eating 2 kiwis before bed has become a popular natural sleep hack, with claims that kiwi can improve sleep quality, help with insomnia, and even boost serotonin.

But how strong is the science?

One frequently cited kiwi sleep study followed just 24 people, mostly women, who ate two kiwis before bed for four weeks. They reported improved sleep—but the study had no control group.

When another study compared kiwi vs. pears in 74 people with insomnia and measured 12 different outcomes, kiwi only came out ahead on two.

Then there’s the serotonin claim. Kiwi may contain serotonin, but dietary serotonin doesn’t simply cross the blood-brain barrier and increase serotonin in your brain.

So, are kiwis healthy and delicious? Absolutely. 🥝

Are they “nature’s sleep aid” or a replacement for proven sleep habits? The evidence isn’t nearly that convincing.

For better sleep, focus on the fundamentals: regular exercise, reducing afternoon caffeine, and limiting screen time before bed.

Dr. Alex Tatem reacts to the viral kiwi sleep hack and breaks down what the research actually says about kiwi, serotonin, insomnia, and sleep quality.
